Florida is the only state in the continental United States to have extensive reef building coral formations near its coasts. Every year, over six million visitors come to the Florida Keys to enjoy the incredible coral reef system and the unique waters in which it lives.

The waters immediately surrounding most of the 1,700 islands that make up the Florida Keys have been designated as a national marine sanctuary since 1990. The sanctuary extends 220 miles in a northeast to southwest arc between the southern tip of Key Biscayne, south of Miami, to beyond, but not including, the Dry Tortugas Islands.
